How MR Group built a global end-to-end platform to standardize rig inspections in 90 countries

ModuSpec (MR Group) has been a leading authority in rig inspections since 1986. With a track record of inspecting over 600 Jack-ups and 550 floating rigs/vessels, they understand the complexity of the rig intake process. However, the industry faces a critical challenge: "Tribal Knowledge." As experienced surveyors retire, their expertise risks leaving the industry. To preserve this knowledge and modernize operations, ModuSpec launched Argus: a digital rig intake platform powered by Smartflow.

The Challenge

Traditionally, rig inspections were plagued by disconnected experiences. Surveyors relied on a mix of Excel spreadsheets, WhatsApp messages, emails, and Word documents.

  • Fragmentation: Data was scattered across different formats, making it impossible to get a holistic view of fleet health.
  • Inconsistency: With varying standards across clients (e.g., Chevron, ExxonMobil, Shell) and rig types (Land, Jack-up, Floaters), maintaining a standardized inspection scope was difficult.
  • Reactive compliance: Tracking thousands of certifications manually meant that expiry dates could be missed, leading to compliance lapses.

The solution

ModuSpec developed Argus, an end-to-end platform that covers the entire inspection lifecycle—from scoping to close-out.

  • Smart scoping: The platform allows users to define the exact scope based on Unit Type (e.g., Jack-up vs. Land Rig), Region, and Client Standards (e.g., API, OEM, or specific operator checklists) .
  • Execution & reporting: Inspectors work in a collaborative digital environment. They generate Daily Reports and track Action Items in real-time, categorized by severity (Critical, Major, Minor). This eliminates the "reporting lag" typical of paper-based inspections.
  • Compliance control tower: Argus acts as a central repository for certifications. It tracks compliance status live, sending automated alerts for expiring certificates or outstanding document reviews.

The Results

The transition to Argus has transformed ModuSpec’s service delivery, enabling them to support major clients efficiently.

  • Accelerated audits: By streamlining the setup and reporting phases, rig maintenance audits are executed faster with less manual administration.
  • Risk visibility: The "Action Items Tracker" provides immediate visibility into critical risks, allowing rig managers to make proactive decisions rather than waiting for a final PDF report.
  • Global standardization: Whether inspecting a rig in the North Sea or the Middle East, the workflow is consistent, ensuring high-quality data collection across 90 countries.

The future:

From data to wisdom Argus is not just a reporting tool; it is a "smart" system designed for the future.

  • Institutional knowledge: By digitizing the expertise of senior surveyors into the platform's logic, ModuSpec preserves knowledge within the system, countering the industry's "brain drain".
  • Predictive capabilities: The platform is built on a self-learning model. As more data is collected, ModuSpec is building the foundation for predictive maintenance, moving from simply recording findings to predicting equipment failures before they occur.
